What the article covers

The report, published on 11 April 2024 by Medi.co.th (a Thai medical and pharmaceutical news journal), describes the introduction of UroLift at the Urology Center of Bumrungrad International Hospital. It notes that UroLift was approved by the US FDA in 2013 and by the Thai FDA on 5 February 2024.

Dr. Atip's explanation

Dr. Atip described UroLift as a minimally invasive treatment that widens the urethra where an enlarged prostate presses on it:

  • After light sedation, small implants made of medical-grade stainless steel and nitinol are placed through the urethra using a scope
  • Usually about 4–6 implants are used, depending on prostate size and severity, to hold the prostate tissue apart
  • No tissue is cut or removed, and the procedure takes about 30 minutes to an hour

He also outlined who may be suitable, for example men with a moderately to significantly enlarged prostate of up to about 100 g, men who are older or not fit for major surgery, and men who wish to avoid sexual side effects. Every patient is assessed individually.
